The ZU-23-2 is a towed Soviet 23 mm twin-barreled anti-aircraft gun first put into service in 1960. It received its first real battlefield baptism in the Vietnam War when it was included in the supplies the Soviets delivered to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). It is a quick, rapid response to helicopter power: Simply hook it to a large enough truck or jeep and wheel it to the location needing cover.

Though it’s given an “anti-aircraft” designation, the Sergei had a variety of uses. Its main use was against lower altitude aircraft, but it was also useful as an APC when mounted on the rooftop of its carrier. This was actually the preferred method for the Iraqis in the first Gulf War when they found that supersonic US jets made for impossible targets.
